Essure is a new method of female sterilization. Marketed by Conceptus Inc., Essure has been approved by the FDA for use in the United States since 2002.
This form of permanent birth control must be inserted by a healthcare professional. The Essure system consists of two flexible micro-inserts that are placed into the fallopian tubes. The inserts are small metal coils that cause scar tissue to form, therefore blocking the fallopian tubes and preventing the sperm from fertilizing the egg. They are inserted vaginally during a procedure called a hysteroscopy. It is unlike a tubal ligation in that there are no actual incisions or anesthesia. A back-up form of birth control must be used for three months after the procedure. At that time you will need to return to your healthcare provider to ensure that the fallopian tubes have closed off completely. This can be confirmed by undergoing an HSG (hysterosalpingogram) test. It is a simple test in which a radiologist injects contrast dye near the fallopian tubes via a small tube inserted into the uterus. An X-ray is then taken to ensure that the coils are in the correct location and that the dye cannot pass through the fallopian tubes. By three months, nearly all women are considered to be sterile. However, in some cases it may take six months, or possibly even longer, for the fallopian tubes to become completely obstructed. Once you have been deemed sterile you will no longer need to rely on another form of birth control.
