The matter of whether Paula Deen having type 2 diabetes is attributable to her years of high-calorie cooking is one the Food Network celebrity left to speculation when she announced her illness. Despite the previous criticism of Deen for promoting and selling deep fried and fat-laden eating, she chose to reveal her condition as part of a new campaign to advertise a diabetes drug.

She had kept her condition a secret, except to immediate family members, since 2008, not commenting publicly even after the National Enquirer reported she had the disease. Deen claimed in an appearance on NBC TV’s Today show to make her disclosure that she’s always urged moderation in preparing recipes with butter, cheese, heavy cream, and sugar.

“Deen, whose ‘Brunch Burger’ features a bacon-covered hamburger sandwiched between Krispy Kreme doughnuts, has been criticized before for her over-the-top recipes,” Mary Lander wrote in “Paula Deen’s diabetes not a deterrent to fans,” in the January 18, 2012 Savannah Morning News.
